Traveling has evolved significantly over the years. With airlines imposing fees for checked baggage, travelers have adapted by packing lighter to avoid extra charges. The art of packing light differs from person to person, but here are some tips we’ve found invaluable during our journeys across Asia and Europe.
General thoughts
- Regardless of the duration of our trip, we typically plan for a week’s worth of clothing: 7 pairs of underwear, 7 pairs of socks, 7 shirts, 2 to 3 pairs of shorts, and 1 pair of pants. We’re comfortable using laundry services in the countries we visit.
- We are gradually shifting away from large luggage. They often become a burden due to their weight and inconvenience, especially in Europe where cobblestone streets are common, making mobility difficult. The perfect solution is a 30-50 liter backpack that is airline approved, paired with carry-on luggage if necessary.
- Optional other jackets and formal wear if needed. Layering ability over highly specific pieces of clothing.

Things we love
Osprey Farpoint 40 Liter Backpack – this is the men’s model and my go-to carry. In my experience, 40 liters is ideal for fitting a week’s worth of clothing, though some travelers pack even lighter. I’m still fine-tuning my packing approach. 🙂 There is also a women’s version available. The backpack includes a dedicated hydration sleeve and laptop compartment, is compressible for more compact daily use, and offers enough capacity to serve multiple purposes beyond just luggage. Its harness and hip belt are exceptionally comfortable and can be stowed away when you want to tuck the bag overhead or under the seat without straps dangling. A thoughtfully designed piece of travel gear.
We always use packing cubes. With so many options available I won’t recommend a brand, but highly recommend them over simply tossing items into a suitcase or bag. Packing cubes make it easy to quickly locate your belongings, and they also help compress clothes for more efficient packing.
I also use an Osprey Ultralight Roll Pack organizer for toiletries. I also have a second one for random electronic cables and accessories to keep them organized.
We always bring a Google Chromecast streamer for those days when we just want to relax in our hotel or Airbnb. 😀 We also carry both his and her tablets. I use the Samsung S6 Lite, which is more than sufficient for my daily needs—watching videos and editing photos. My wife uses an iPad, so we’re equally invested in both ecosystems. This might change in the future as I begin editing more videos and require greater processing power.
For charging, we use the UGREEN Nexode 65W GaN USB-C Charging Station paired with the EPICKA Universal Travel Adapter, featuring 4 USB-A ports and an additional USB-C port. If you require more than this, you might want to consult a doctor. 😉
Optional – White Noise Machines – A good night’s sleep is essential, and we’ve found that white noise machines significantly improve our rest, especially since we’re both light sleepers. While phone apps can be convenient, they haven’t been very effective for us. For quite some time, we’ve relied on the Lectrofan white noise machine, which is compact and powered via USB. Recently, we’ve added the smaller, rechargeable DreamEgg Travel Sound Machine to our travel gear for our upcoming trip to Taiwan.
Camera gear we use
Fujifilm XS-20 – likely the smallest camera body I’d recommend. While there are more affordable options within Fuji’s lineup, they share a similar sensor but lack many of the convenient features found in the XS-20. The XE series and XT-30 are worth considering, but if you’re interested in video, the XS-20 stands out with its in-body image stabilization (IBIS) and superior autofocus performance. I also enjoy shooting with recipes but that is another blog post. 😀
When traveling, there are numerous options for clips to attach your camera body to your backpack, but I prefer the PGYTech camera clip quick release system. Each option has its advantages and disadvantages, so you’ll need to choose one that fits your needs and commit to its ecosystem. For times when the camera isn’t clipped to the backpack, I use the PGYTech straps to keep it secure.
During travel, all my gear fits neatly into a compact camera case inside my backpack. I use a versatile S-Zone case, which fits perfectly in a backpack or carry-on luggage like a packing cube, allowing me to transport it safely when not in use.
Lenses – For my travels, I rely on a versatile Sigma duo: the Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 and the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8. Both lenses are compact and lightweight, easily fitting into bags or pockets without taking up much space. They offer excellent focusing distances and strong macro capabilities, while the constant f/2.8 aperture across their focal ranges provides great low-light performance and depth of field control. There are plans for a super-zoom lens – I am leaning towards another compact lens – the Fujinon XF55-200mmF3.5-4.8 R LM OIS to complete my trinity.
DJI Osmo Nano – Most recent addition. Ultra-light, modular video camera perfect for capturing dynamic POV shots. Very capable small video camera that can fit in your pocket and in a lot of interesting scenarios.
With the smaller camera body, a large tripod isn’t necessary. I rely on a combination of my smartphone, DJI Nano, and XS-20, which covers most of my needs. We often use a compact tripod—the Ulanzi MT-44—paired with the Ulanzi MA-23 magnetic phone mount. This setup is highly versatile and can even support the XS-20 thanks to its lightweight design. The tripod sets up quickly for selfies and timer shots and extends to a decent height, though it can be a bit unstable when fully extended. I’m still exploring the market for a smaller tripod that offers greater stability. I also carry a Manfrotto Pixi and an Ulanzi MA-30 for quick setups when I need something even faster.
Osprey Farpoint 40
Osprey Ultralight Roll Pack
