Yes, another AI topic created by WordPress. 😀 But they are valid so I keep going. Balancing Work, Life, and Retirement Goals? Retirement/future life is what we focus on. And the current life is just a means to an end.
Being immigrants to the US, we both have been blessed with the opportunity to work in America but do we call it home? How about another state? How about another country?
As a DINK couple, this topic always sparks our interest. We both feel ready for the day we stop working, but that moment is still a few years away. Recently, we hired a financial advisor to review our current situation and explore future options with us. Meanwhile, we focus on long-term planning, as we have clear goals that influence our present decisions.
Our financial advisor had to make some assumptions about our future earnings and financial growth. One key assumption is that we will continue living in the US, specifically California. As immigrants, we feel fortunate to work here, but do we truly consider it home? What if we moved to another state or even another country?
The idea of GeoArbitrage is something we fully understand. We know that living in places like Taiwan, Europe, or almost anywhere outside the US tends to be less expensive, allowing us to stretch our hard-earned dollars much further.
“By being willing to move around the country and the world, you can dramatically change your financial options. Costs of housing, food, insurance, medicine and all other day-to-day factors of life can change radically depending on where you live and which currency you spend in. Choosing lower-cost places to live lets you keep more of your income and savings, putting substantially more of that money back in your pocket.”

A few photos of Spain… such wonderful memories. Spain is truly an excellent option for our future life. With the NLV visa, like in several other countries, it’s possible to enjoy a similar lifestyle at a significantly lower monthly cost. Additionally, healthcare is generally much more affordable and accessible. And I haven’t even touched on health insurance expenses—that’s a topic for another blog post! 😉
Returning to the topic—how do we balance work, life, and retirement goals? The truth is, they don’t perfectly balance each other. We work to live, not live to work. The goal is steady, reliable work with enough vacation time to explore the world. A few years ago, my wife faced a choice: work longer hours for more money or accept less pay for more time to relax. She chose the latter, and I completely supported her decision. Her built-in vacations remind me to take breaks too—to pause, enjoy the sunsets and sunrises together while we still can. Right now, our focus is on nurturing our mind and body—staying positive, planning annual trips, and prioritizing health and exercise. Retirement goals are always in sight; we’re counting down the days until we retire and steadily working toward our dreams: achieving financial independence, downsizing and decluttering, and traveling full-time for as long as possible. More on these topics soon! 😀
